About the Kenya Eye Health Journal
The Kenya Eye Health Journal (KEHJ) is an open access Journal published by the Ophthalmological Society of Kenya. The aim of KEHJ is to provide a primary outlet for dissemination of research findings and innovations by all cadres of eye health professional and providers in Kenya.
The journal is published in English in hard and soft copy formats and is dedicated to all aspects of ophthalmology and community eye health.
Articles submitted to the KEHJ will undergo editorial and peer reviews before they are published. Editorial review will be undertaken first to ensure that the article complies with the prescribed format prior to being forwarded for peer review.

About the Journal
The Kenya Eye Health Journal (KEHJ) aims to advance research by all eye health practitioners including ophthalmologists, ophthalmic clinical officers, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, program managers, and community-based workers. To achieve this aim, the authors are encouraged to submit articles focusing on both clinical and public eye health.

Review Process
All articles submitted to the KEHJ will undergo editorial and peer reviews before they are published. Editorial review will be undertaken first to ensure that the article complies with the prescribed format prior to being forwarded for peer review. A non-refundable processing fee of US$100 will be charged for an article submitted by an author who is not a member of any of the eye health professional associations in Kenya. Authors will be informed of the decision regarding the peer review within one month after the commencement of the process.
Specifications
Articles should be written in English and comply with the specifications described below:
- Word limit: 3,500 words for an original article, and 8,000 words for review articles. Editorials should not exceed 1,000 words. References, tables, and figures are not included in this word count. The total number of tables, figures, and other illustrations should not be more than eight.
- Fonts: The text should be Arial size 12 with 1.5 spacing.
- Format: Original articles should have a title page and comply with the AIMRADAR format: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, and References.
Title Page
The article should include the title, full names of all the authors and their affiliations, corresponding author, declaration of conflict of interest, and funding. The title should be brief, informative, and not more than 20 words.
Abstract
The abstract for an original research article should contain a maximum of 250 words. It should be structured and contain an introduction, objectives, materials and methods, results, and conclusions. The abstract should not include any references. Invited articles such as editorials and letters to the editor do not require an abstract.
Introduction
The author should assume that the readers are not knowledgeable in their specific field of specialty and thus explain any technical terms and abbreviations.
Materials and Methods
This section should include the study design, period, settings, target population, and details of all the procedures including sampling, data collection, and analysis. Methods that have been published in detail elsewhere should be cited and not described again in detail.
Results
In the results section, the author may briefly present data in text, tables, or figures. A table or figure should not duplicate what is written in the text. Likewise, data should not be duplicated in tables and figures. However, a brief description of the key findings derived from the data contained in a table or figure is necessary.
Discussion
The discussion should focus on interpretation and significance of the study findings with concise, objective comments that describe their relation to other work in the area. The final paragraph should highlight the main conclusions derived from the study findings. Conclusions should be supported by the study findings.
Acknowledgements
Acknowledgements should be brief and should include sources of financial support, sponsorship, and donations.
References
The references should follow the Vancouver format. The total number of references should not exceed fifty for a review article, thirty for an original article, twenty for an editorial, and fifteen for a report. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text.
Authors Contributions
A statement about the contribution of each author to the manuscript must be included.
Ethical Considerations
Authors are responsible for the views, opinions, and authenticity of the material published in the KEHJ. Requirements of the Kenya Data Protection Act and guidelines on research ethics must be fulfilled where applicable. Authors are required to state whether this requirement has been complied with.
Page Proofs, Offprints, and Reprints
Page proofs will be submitted to contributors via email for minor corrections and must be returned within ten days. If requested, ten offprints will be provided at a charge of US$100. Postage will depend on the mode of delivery with no additional charge for posting via email.
Publication
The e-journal shall be published online at the website of the Ophthalmological Society of Kenya.
Copyright Notice
Copyright for the articles published in KEHJ is retained by the journal.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
Standard Operating Procedures for KEHJ Production
Editorial team plans and sets timelines for production of the journal.
Editorial Board collects articles (manuscripts) from authors.
Editor reviews the article to check whether it adheres to the KEHJ format.
Editor allocates 2 reviewers for the article.
Editor sends and re-sends the reviewed article to the corresponding author (to-and-fro process) until the author complies with review requirements.
Editor informs the author about the final reviewer’s decision: article accepted or rejected.
If the article is accepted by the reviewers, the article is submitted to the Editorial Board for final decision: article accepted or rejected.
If the article is accepted by the Editorial Board, the Editor-in-Chief assigns the Journal volume in which the article is to be published (depending on the theme).
Editorial team collates all the reviewed articles and performs copy editing of the journal.
Editor forwards the copy-edited journal to the printer for typesetting.
The final copy is forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief for approval to print.
Final copy is forwarded to the printer for printing.
